The Los Angeles Lakers season ended once again at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, this time in the first round via a gentleman’s sweep in five games, and LeBron James provided an interesting insight on how an early season development doomed their campaign

While the series could have gone either way with the Nuggets winning Games 2 and 5 on a pair of Jamaal Murray game-winners, James made pointed comments on the butterfly effect that led to another disappointing end to the Lakers’ season.

LeBron James says sluggish early season three-point shooting doomed Lakers

In the latest episode of his Mind the Game Pod with NBA sharpshooter-turned-host JJ Redick, LeBron James pointed to the Lakers’ slow early season start that doomed their cause from the beginning (starting at the 37:21 mark).

“We couldn’t shoot,” said James, when asked by Redick about the Lakers’ woes from the field during the early portion of the regular season. “We always say the law of averages is going to even itself out. The first month and a half, two months we couldn't hit the side of a f*****g cow's a** from three-point [range]. We couldn’t.”

“We’re 29th in three-points attempted and people are complaining while we’re top five in free throw attempts, ’cause that’s what we do,” James added.

Redick then gave his two cents on the Lakers’ turnaround from a paltry shooting from long-distance, saying D’Angelo Russell’s increased volume and shooting efficiency from behind the arc pushed up the team’s offense.

“The fact that [D’Angelo Russell] became a high volume, high efficiency three-point shooter halfway through a season started back in January, that adds value to the offense,” Redick said

Interestingly, the comments by James on the podcast came days before the start of the NBA Playoffs, which made them more intriguing knowing now how the Lakers ended their campaign where they failed to return to the finals for the first time since the 2020 bubble. James also made rounds on social media to address the future of his playing career.

Players, coaches still need to read the game to win, says Redick

During this episode, Redick and James discussed how three-point shooting was weaponized by teams and how much teams’ analytics guys have preached shooting from deep over midrange jumpers. However, Redick noted that players and coaches to read the game to win in today’s NBA, rather than solely rely on analytics and advanced statistics.

“I think you have to coach every team differently,” Redick said, in response to James’ remarks on how the Lakers were managed earlier in the season. “[T]here are certain teams that foul more than the others and there are teams that put pressure more on the rim more than others.”

“And if you can not foul and you can get to the free throw line, that creates an advantage. In the same way that making and taking more threes versus making and taking less threes creates an advantage,” added Redick.
